We've been learning about counting coins in math. We began by counting pennies, then nickels, and finally combinations of both coins. Below is a sample student tutorial video on how to count these coins, using a few of the strategies we have been practicing during math time. This video was made with the app "Explain Everything." Enjoy!

Tasty Tallies
We've been learning all about tally marks in first grade this week! The chant "four standing tall, ones makes the fall" echoes in our room. Our class uses Everyday Math Curriculum, which really emphasizes the use of tally makes, as well as tally charts.
So, in order to make drawing lines on a paper more engaging, we incorporated food, simply because everything is always better with food! For the record, it worked! Every child was excited to visit this center and engaged the entire time. Another benefit of pretzel sticks, is that it's an easy fix when a child forgets to "make a fall." One of the biggest frustrations with tally marks is when a child has to erase quite a bit to correct his or her mistake. So, simply moving a pretzel stick is a huge plus!
